Armies on Parade 2017: AoS Tzeentch

This year I entered Armies on Parade AoS with my Tzeentch warband. The miniatures are mostly the ones I painted from the Silver Tower boz last year. The only new miniature I painted was a Lord of Change. I really like making terrain, and I'm extremely happy with this display-board.

It's nearly impossible to photograph a display board, but I did my best. This one will probably work best as a backdrop for future miniatures when I take it back home.

Making the board

I used a silicone mould with two different sized faces to make the daemonic faces.

The base is a 50 x 50 cm MDF board. I used polystyrene and expanding foam to make the mountain.

The texture was a mix of wood glue, short pieces of yarn and black paint. I pushed the faces into the wet texture mix.

Dinosaurs and more texture.

More texture and faces.

I primed the board Chaos Black.

I sprayed brown followed by Mephiston Red over the faces, trying to leave the darker colours in the shadows.

I used cheap thick acrylic paints on the ground and between the faces. I tried the best I could to match GWs Death World Forrest which I've used on the miniatures bases.

I shaded the faces with sepia shade, and highlighted them with a light drybrush of Mephiston Red. The eyes where painted black, with white rings in the sentre.

Armies on Parade, part II

Armies on Parade Age of Sigmar is in 10 days. I've never done a fantasy display board before, and have decided to give it a try. I don't have a large fantasy army, but I have painted almost all the Tzeentch miniatures from Silver Tower.

I want to create something strange and chaotic for my Tzeentch warband. The Idea is to create some kind of organic mountain or forrest. I love creepy human faces. If you have followed this blog for a while you've probably seen several creations in my collection with strange human-like faces. But this time I'm really going to outdo myself. I'm planning to use hundreds of human faces on this project. They will be all over the board and backdrop, growing out of the ground.

So far I've made around 150 faces. These were made by terracotta clay pushed into silicone moulds. on the first few faces I waited for the clay to dry before removing them from the moulds. But then I would only be able to make a couple of faces a day, and it would take forever to get enough. I ended up pushing clay into the moulds and quickly pulling them back out. This made the faces warped and stretched, which is a good look for Tzeentch. On the next batch I'll try to find something less sticky and easier to work with than the terracotta clay.

Armies on Parade 2017, part I

I just found out that GW Oslo will arrange two Armies on Parade competitions this year! One for Age of Sigmar and one for 40k. Which means I can make two entries! I haven't started on any of the display boards yet, so it's going to be quite a challenge to finish both.

The plan is to enter my Tzeentch army in AoS. This army will mostly be the miniatures I painted last year for Silver Tower.

The 40k army will be my Nurgle horde, based on the old Pestigor warband, the Poxwalkers, some new bigger monsters and maybe Mortarion and a few Plague Marines.
The first new monster it a mutant Giant. GWs new giant set consists of two giants. So me and a couple of friend decided to have a little competition, a giant-off. When all the giants are finished, I'll write a post about them here.

Armies on Parade 2016 by Rebecca

Welcome to the first guest post on this blog who is the winner of this years Armies on Parade competition in Oslo:

Hi, my name is Rebecca and here is my Armies on Parade entry. The building is made off card board boxes, covered in squares of plastic card. The faces you see around it, are different materials. The smaller ones are made by casting doll-faces and angle statues in green-stuff. While the big one it the head of a mannequin, used by hairdressers. I actually had to shave it and cover the top with filler.

The leader of my group is called Matris Magnæ. She is also depicted on the two paintings on the towers. This model is based on a Nurgle Blight King. She has Goblin arms, Plaguebearer legs and a hed from the fat priest from Bretannia's Men at Arms box. Her chair is based on a Plaguedrone with spider legs from the Goblin Spider Riders.

Matris Magnæ's slaves, carrying her luggage as she walks in here garden. They are based on Skaven with Flagellant heads.

The Pig Rider is one of my favourite models in the group. He controls the kingdoms food production and trade with other colonies. The model is based on a plaguebearer with a zombie head. His pig is actually a plastic toy pig from the toy store, with some modifications done to it.

This mode is based on a Blight King. He is the commander of her majesties mutant cyborg army.

Another model based on a Blight King. She is the minister of culture and entertainment.

The final minister is Gregor the XVIth, master of coin. He is based on Festus the Leechlord.

I also converted an Imperial Knight into a walking organ. The civilisation have lived relatively peacefully for centuries, and have no real use for warmachines. The Knights main purpose is to play music and lift heavy objects.

One of the Royal Guards based on a Plaguebearer with Mechannicus legs.

Lastly we have her majesties army of mutants. Because it has been so long since the colony went to war, the army is mostly for show, and practically useless in battle. Together with the Knight they make a good parade. These guys are based on Goblins from GW's Hobbit range. Their heads have been swapped for Space Marine backpack vents.

Thanks for reading! If you would like to see pictures of what I'm currently working on, you can check out my Instagram.
